The best thing about being in IT is also the worst. Software works and you have lots of choices. So now I've just had some great fun with more operations responsibilities than I've had in a very long time. In order to accomplish this new set of challenges I've had quite a few overlapping options, and so wandering a bit away from my personal specialties, I'm now working with Hashicorp's tools.
Consul is something on the order of a 100Kb executable that is an agent that works as a client and a server in a swarm. It does everything in a single process easily tracked in ps and in the task manager. Unfortunately there's not a binary for Beaglebone Debian, but I'm sure that's coming. Using version 0.7.0, I have floated an army of them out in my own home net. So now I know every time my machine goes down. I haven't hooked it up to SNS so I do have to check first, but it's pretty cool.
